OK, so it’s been a while between drinks! We wanted to change that so, welcome to our first newsletter (in a while). We know your time is precious, so we’ll aim to be as informative, entertaining and brief as we can.
So, what’s new? Ah, where to begin. Let’s start with the weather! Vintage 2023 is one to remember (or forget!). Wild weather & torrential rain wreaked havoc across Victoria increasing disease pressure and limiting the ability to look after vineyards ie: simply not being able to get a tractor anywhere due to soft ground & mud! Yields in some parts were way down, and others destroyed, however, some narrowly avoided disaster. The upside is, the latter part of the season was great and we got some fantastic quality fruit! We look forward to releasing these wines when the time comes (later this year for the 2023 Pinot Grigio).
Continuing on that positive note, since we last met, we’ve added a string to our winemaking bow and ventured into the Mornington Peninsula to make some amazing, premium cool-climate wines. 2021 marks our inaugural vintage in this magnificent region and the wines we made are tremendous.
Last but not least, perhaps the BIGGEST news is the impending launch of our BRAND NEW Wine Club with first-round offers pegged for the last week of July. Club members will get exclusive access to Winemaker selections, special events, pre-vintage releases, discounts, and much more. Further comms will follow very soon so watch this space. We sincerely hope you stick around!

Introducing our new Mornington Peninsula Range.
For a while, we'd been keen on turning our hand to some cool climate wine-making, particularly with Chardonnay & Pinot Noir. We believe these varietals are represented best from Mornington Peninsula, so that's where we went in search. In 2021 we discovered some exceptional parcels from an amazing east-facing vineyard on Main Ridge. Narelle, in collaboration with our friend and cool climate wine-making guru Anthony Fikkers, got straight to work crafting our first vintage in 2021. We couldn't be more pleased with the results and the critics have agreed! Serendipitously, in 2022 we came across another incredible vineyard source, also on Main Ridge and just across the road from one of the famed 10 Minutes by Tractor vineyards. Here we got more amazing Chardy & Pinot plus some mind-blowingly good Pinot Gris. We grabbed this opportunity with both hands and have just released the result. So, may we introduce to you...

2022 Tar & Roses ‘Barrel Fermented’ Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris
|
|
Wow, did we have fun making this wine! Fruit was handpicked in the cool of the morning from an immaculate little vineyard on Main Ridge. Grapes arrived at the winery and were immediately de-stemmed & transferred straight into our 100-year-old basket press then pressed by hand (and foot). Juice was racked into seasoned French oak for fermentation & maturation over 10 months. The result? Pale, bran straw in colour, the nose is abundant with ripe stone-fruits & cumquats with hints of apricot, dried fruits & orange blossom. The palate is generous & viscous with a light phenolic grip. Characters of spiced pear, stonefruits & apricot emerge, all kept in line with fresh, racy acidity and a light touch of spice. This wine is very limited with only 60 dozen made. Club members get first bite.

2021 Tar & Roses Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay
|
|
Made in collaboration with Pinot & Chardonnay expert Anthony Fikkers (ex Giant Steps, Mac Forbes, Medhurst), fruit was sourced from a single vineyard, high on Main Ridge, handpicked then whole-bunch pressed to French oak (12% new) for 12 months.
Ray Jordan writes “A lovely example of Mornington Peninsula chardonnay showing that combination of delicacy and power. Has a savoury slightly lemon curd palate with a little almond meal complexity. Love the overall feel." –

2021 Tar & Roses Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir
|
|
Sourced from the same vineyard as the Chardonnay and also made in collaboration with Anthony, the 2021 Pinot Noir was handpicked and fermented in open pots for 12 days with 15% whole bunches before maturation over 12 months in French oak of which 10% was new.
Ray Jordan writes: "When things come together in Mornington, the results can be mighty good. This is right in the zone. Opens with a meaty and slightly gamey nuance over more primary red fruits. There’s a little toasty oak worked in, while the fine chalky tannins add some spine. The mid palate has a firmish core but the supple fruit wraps it up perfectly. A pinot of some poise."

Say hello to our NEW Nebbiolo - 'The Fog'
Nebbiolo is our namesake ('tar and roses' being a popular aromatic descriptor for this Northern Italian varietal). The name is derived from the Italian ‘nebbia’ (meaning fog) and alludes to the mists that often form in the vineyard during harvest in its native Piedmont. Therefore, we decided to further champion the varietal by naming our 2021 Nebbiolo.....

2021 Tar & Roses ‘The Fog’ Nebbiolo
|
|
Sourced from a prime site in Heathcote on the ancient red Cambrian soil, the fruit was harvested and crushed to a small open fermenter & hand plunged 3 times a day. After approximately 10 days of fermentation, it was gently pressed to tank then racked directly to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation and mature in seasoned French oak barriques for 18 months.
Jeni Port writes: "Unfurls slowly, as Nebbiolo can do so brilliantly, releasing lifted, generous aromatics. Rose petals, red licorice, pepper, cranberry, cherry and woodsmoke aromas mingle. Lovely balance on display in lifted fruit, savoury, earthy tannins and a long finish. Reveals assured confidence and poise with a grape that can be notoriously difficult to work with."

We’ve spent years working hard behind the scenes on another international collaboration, this time with a world-renowned Barolo producer. More to come in our next newsletter but our inaugural 2019 Barolo DOCG should hit these shores in late 2023.
Ciao for now and hope to see you around.
