The attractive nose shows hints of rose petal and dried herbs. The dry, savoury palate delivers enough fruit.

2009 Tar&Roses Shiraz, Heathcote, A$18
Don Lewis was the winemaker at the Mitchelton winery for more than 34 years. He always loved Spain and, in 2004, found himself in the Priorat region with Narelle King a chartered accountant who had discovered the world of wine. They got along famously, joining forces to create the Tar & Roses label. Their 2009 Shiraz is pleasingly aromatic, it's ripe raspberry and cherry flavours supported by star anise, fennel seed and licorice. The deep savoury palate comfortably carries the firm backbone of tannins.

Medium red-purple; it is possible to have an elegant, medium-bodied, fragrant wine from Heathcote with midrange alcohol; the wine has fresh red cherry and plum fruit on the bouquet and palate, some spicy nuances and fine tannins. Waiting for you to open it whenever the mood takes you. Drink to 2019.

A more savoury, less grapy style of shiraz in which spice and ripe blackberry aromas and flavours mesh beautifully. It's very intense but also retains elegance and style, the palate having good line and length. This should be on everyone's table as the house red! 94 points.

WINE OF THE WEEK
94/100
Mitchelton's former chief winemaker of many years' standing, Don Lewis, and Narelle King are responsible for the excellent Tar & Roses wines, none better value for money than this Heatcote shiraz. It's a more savoury, less grapy style of shiraz in which spice and ripe blackberry aromas and flavours mesh beautifully. It's particularly intense and packed with flavour but manages to retain elegance and style, the palate having good line and a long aftertaste. It deserves to be on everyone's table as the house red. Drink now and for at least 10 years. 94/100.

Yes, all the hype is well directed and this is a more than worthy successor to the much-exalted 2007. Liquorice, black plums, cherries and wood spice coalesce in a textural, supple palate that weaves dark fruits and controlled oak together seamlessly.

WINE OF THE WEEK
Intense and spicy, this classic Heathcote shiraz is a perfect match for Sunday roasts and barbecues. And it's a steal, retailing for about $18. Created by Don Lewis and Narelle King, who earned their vineyard stripes in the Spanish region of Priorat, the Tar & Roses Shiraz tastes of summer berries and fruity chocolate. Delicious.

WINE FRONT
CAMPBELL MATTINSON
'Tar' is the most evocative description in Italian wine. It refers to the wonderful, bitumen-esque depth and the smell and richness of fresh tar, and it's the way a good Italian nebbiolo should taste.
Take this richness, add the perfume of red roses, and there's your Holy Grail - masculine and feminine, power and seduction all at once. Stop me, I'm salivating!
Imagine, then, the response among wine lovers when a new Australian wine label emerged a couple of years back called, you guessed it, Tar & Roses. Talk about cunning. Nothing to do with Italian nebbiolo, the brand is more about making good, slightly exotic red wine, typically with a deep sense of savouriness. (Italian inspired rather than grown, perhaps.)
A perfect example is the latest Tar & Roses Heathcote Shiraz 2008. Heady with perfume and packed with dark fruit power, it has an earthen quality that makes it the perfect match for a mushroom pizza.
