92/100
TOP 50 REDS

This blend of grenache and carignan is a big, fleshy, ultra-ripe red, typical of the Priorat region: robust, tannic and needs time. Loaded with chocolate, prune, vanilla and jam aromas, it's gutsy and a bit raw. Now to 2020. Food - Manchego cheese

CAMPBELL MATTINSON

Tar & Roses Miro is mostly a blend of the grenache and carinena grapes, with small amounts of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot blended in. It's made by Narelle King and Don Lewis and grown in Priorato, Spain- where King and Lewis have made wine the past five years running.

I was a bit surprised at the amount of vanillin oak at first, though it soon settled deep into the wine. From there is was all fun: lots of tarry, leathery, velvety tannin, a good amount of slatey, leathery flavour and a sense throughout that the wine is very happy living inside its skin; it's developed and fresh, tannic and slurpable at once. Nutty, musky aftertaste reminds of the oak and it could probably do with a greater sense of persistence, but I'm happily on board the style and quality here.

93 POINTS AND WORTH IT....

Made from Grenache, Carinena, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Very much new world on the nose but its Spanish origins coming through on the palate. Plenty of fruit to start but tannin and acid come into play quickly; good length. 93 points and worth it. $49

TIM WHITE

Deep, coal-dust scented with potting mix and shoe polish, even roast meat. Then there's lots of fruit cake and a touch of soy. Very deep tannin with plenty of fruit power to match, perhaps a hint of cabernet sauvignon blackcurrant dustiness?
